Estimation Through Takeoff Software

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Computers are changing the way that we all do business. That should be obvious to anyone who’s looked at recent developments in the world of technology. If you are involved in the world of construction, then you should be up-to-date with the latest in takeoff software.

The basics of the program are just amazing. You can just do your designs through the software and it will make a professional blueprint from your information. Then you just have to change the little menus to make it better. You can shift the display to show different rooms or even build up material lists. These are some of the more complex ideas though. Just think about how nice it would be to calculate square feet when you are planning a job. Just type in the number and you’ll be able to have detailed and running estimations of all the little projects.

It’s obvious that you shouldn’t buy the software just to do square feet estimate programs. You can still do those through basic calculator functions. The idea is that they are just a small part of a much bigger program. If you can do these estimates that quickly, then think of all the other things that you can do.

In-the-works videogames cater to music fans

Monday, December 15th, 2008

With more than $1 billion in sales and 50 million tracks downloaded between them — on a base of only about 350 songs — the “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” videogame franchises emerged this year as serious moneymakers for the music industry. But are they bringing in enough per track?

During a quarterly earnings call in August, Warner Music Group chairman/CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. said he wants more money from music games like Activision’s “Guitar Hero” or he’ll stop licensing music. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick fired back in an interview, suggesting that labels should pay his company for promoting their music.

Next year’s big-money showdown is between “Guitar Hero” and MTV Games and EA’s “Rock Band,” but there’s plenty of action on the undercard. Among the other titles competing for music industry support and gamers’ dollars are Nintendo’s “Wii Music,” Disney’s “Ultimate Band,” Acclaim’s “Rockfree” and XS Games’ “PopStar Guitar.”

The winner of this competition may be labels and artists, who will have opportunities to feature their music more prominently than they would be able to in the big two games. The Plain White T’s scored an exclusive spot on “Ultimate Band,” for example, while 3 Doors Down is a featured act on “PopStar Guitar.”

THE PARTNERSHIP

Amazon teamed up with the makers of the hit game “Grand Theft Auto IV” to let players tag any song on the soundtrack with a virtual mobile phone used by the game’s protagonist. Those who did received an e-mail with more information about the song and artist and accessed a custom playlist on Amazon where they could then purchase the track.

Almost 700,000 players tagged more than 2 million songs, according to “Grand Theft Auto IV” publisher Rockstar Games, although Amazon won’t divulge how many resulted in sales. But it’s the first time a console game has integrated digital music purchases, and it has given other developers plenty of ideas.

THE DARK HORSE

When Sierra Entertainment unveiled details of its “Brutal Legend,” online gamer forums went crazy with excitement. But the reaction among music executives was tepid at best — perhaps because the game isn’t about music simulation but the story of a roadie sent back in time when heavy metal gods ruled the world.

Drawing heavily on Nordic mythology and metal imagery — and featuring voice acting from the likes of actor/musician Jack Black, Motorhead’s Lemmy Kilmister and heavy metal singer-songwriter Ronnie James Dio — the game has the names and the potential soundtrack to win big among hardcore gamers and metal fans alike. The game remains in limbo, though, as Sierra Entertainment parent company Vivendi Games and Activision complete their merger.

THE BEATLES

They’re not available on iTunes or any other digital music service. But the Fab Four made headlines when MTV announced that it would be making a videogame featuring the group’s music, history, images and characters.

Exactly what the game will look like or do is under wraps until its release in 2009. But it’s expected to be an interactive product similar to “Rock Band.” And the development will lay the groundwork for ways that iconic artists like the Beatles can work with games to introduce their music to new fans and let older ones experience it in a new way.

New discovery could improve the lives of preemies

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

A potential new avenue for altering lung development in the embryo which may help to improve the outcome for very premature babies has been identified by scientists at Cardiff University.

In collaboration with scientists at the Saban Research Institute at Los Angeles Children’’s Hospital, the researchers discovered that a molecule called CaR (calcium receptor) is a crucial factor in the control of lung development in the womb.

CaR co-ordinates messages from within the growing foetus that instruct the lungs to develop thousands of channels and tiny air pockets.

This complicated structure is what will ultimately allow oxygen to move from the air into the baby’s blood stream.

The study was carried out in the laboratories of Dr Daniela Riccardi and Professor Paul Kemp (School of Biosciences, Cardiff University, UK) in collaboration with Professor David Warburton (Saban Research Institute, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, USA).

“Within minutes of birth, a baby relies solely on its lungs to get the oxygen it needs. One of the reasons that the lives of very premature babies are in such dire jeopardy is that the final stages of lung development happen very late in pregnancy and so premature babies are born with immature lungs that struggle to take in enough oxygen. Under-developed lungs don’t absorb enough oxygen and premature babies with respiratory problems often develop chronic lung disease that may extend into adulthood.

He added: “Through our research we have gained a better understanding of how lungs develop normally and so we can now begin to work out what happens when things go wrong, such as when a baby is born much too early. From the work we have published today, we now have a real possibility for fast-tracking new drugs for helping these very premature babies.” said Riccardi.

Kemp said: “The really exciting thing about CaR is that there are already drugs available that can alter its function and, therefore, could modulate lung development. We know that CaR works by sensing calcium and we also know that there are already drugs available that are designed to regulate how calcium is used in the body. If we can show that one of these drugs can modulate the action of CaR in the lung, it could be used to mature the lungs of a very premature baby as it grows. Better still, an existing drug could potentially be approved much more quickly than a new one.”

Professor Janet Allen, BBSRC Director of Research said: “It is exciting to see that BBSRC-funded research has the potential to improve the lives of thousands of very premature babies. These scientists have shown that by first asking questions about a fundamental biological process, the possibilities for understanding and treating devastating human disease can then be thrown wide open. This demonstrates the value of basic research in biology for delivering real life impact.”

Mozilla Security Chief Calls It Quits

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Window Snyder, the head of security at Mozilla Corp., will resign her position at the end of the year, she said in a blog post Wednesday.

Snyder, who has the kooky job title of “chief security something-or-other,” is in charge of improving security in the Firefox Web browser and other Mozilla projects.

She isn’t yet saying publicly what she plans to do next. A source familiar with her plans said she is going to work at a start-up company.

“I am sad to be leaving, but I am excited to go work on something I have always been passionate about,” Snyder wrote in the Mozilla security blog. “I wish I could tell you about it now, but that will have to wait for a while.”

She joined Mozilla in September 2006 from Microsoft, where she was a security strategist and worked on Microsoft’s security-focused Windows XP Service Pack 2 update.

Security has become more important for Mozilla as its Firefox browser has gained more users, making it a more attractive target for malicious hackers. Just last week it was being targeted by a new Trojan that tries to steal online banking passwords, according to security company BitDefender.

“It’s impossible to build a perfectly secure browser,” Snyder told Computerworld in an interview earlier this year. “That’s not the goal. The goal is to build the safest browser we can. It’s an ongoing process. It’s not a goal where we’ll say, ‘OK, we’re done.’”

In her blog post, Snyder said she was leaving Mozilla’s security in capable hands, naming several colleagues who will assume her duties. She did not immediately reply to an e-mail requesting further comment.

Firefox’s worldwide market share passed 20 percent in November, the first time it has stayed that high for an entire month, according to figures from Net Applications. The group also develops the Thunderbird e-mail application.

Scientists using butterfly wings to develop self-cleaning windows

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

French scientists are trying to develop self-cleaning windows and windshields – with the help of butterfly wings.

Butterfly wings – and lotus leaves – can repel water with ease because of the microstructures on their surface.

The waffle-like structures found on butterfly wings can make it difficult for water droplets to spread out.

In a bid to develop self-cleaning windows and windshields, Christophe Peroz at the French National Centre for Scientific Research in Aubervilliers has developed a quicker and cheaper technique to reproduce the microstructures on butterfly wings, which repel water and dirt.

The technique involves pouring a silicon-based polymer liquid over an actual wing or leaf and leaving it to dry, reports News.com.au

They then peeled off the solid polymer and used it as a mould for methyltriethoxysilane (MTEOS) - an agent used in glass-making.

It can be changed from a liquid to a gel by spinning it. The MTEOS is later poured onto the mould and spun, forming a 900-nanometre-thick film.

Many such films can be combined to create a large water-repellent surface for a window.

Flickr Gets Flashy With New Video-Enabled Mobile Site

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Flickr’s making it easier to stay connected with a brand new mobile site being debuted Thursday. The revamped m.flickr.com brings a refreshed design and a handful of new features, including mobile video playback for some Flickr users.

Mobile Limitations

First, the reality check: The new Flickr mobile won’t work with all cell phones. The enhanced features are limited to devices with “advanced browsers.” The list is pretty ext ensive, though — if you have an iPhone, an iPod Touch, an Android phone, or a device with Opera Mobile, Firefox Mobile, or another WebKit-based browser, you’re golden. Otherwise, you’ll be limited to basic functionality.

The video playback feature is currently available only on the iPhone and iPod Touch, though Flickr promises to roll out support to the other “advanced browser” platforms in the very near future.

As for mobile video uploading, it follows the model introduced on the regular Flickr site and is available only to “pro” subscribers, with a 90-second cap placed on all uploaded clips.

A Full Makeover

The rest of the Flickr mobile revamp features an updated and more user-friendly menu system with more focus on social features. Your activity stream is beefed up and accessible right from the home screen. Flickr mobile will also now let you comment on and favorite photos from your phone — an option missing from the past design. It makes contact management a bit more intuitive, too, letting you add contacts and easily view friends’ recently uploaded photos. Privacy settings are now accessible from the mobile site as well.

Flickr’s modernized interface aims to make submitting pictures simpler with a new built-in way to add Flickr directly into your address book. Once you do that, you can just drop a mobile photo into an e-mail, tap in the “Flickr” address, and hit send. And if you’ve got nothing interesting to show, the retooled Flickr mobile brings the day’s top public photos to your fingertips so you can find something to see.

Mobile Photo Growth

Flickr’s motivation for expanding its mobile space makes sense. The Yahoo-owned company says it’s seen a 50 percent increase in usage over the past year, and it’s not alone. Recent numbers from data measurement firm ComScore indicate mobile photo messaging jumped 60 percent in the U.S. this past year. I n a somewhat surprising twist, the group with the highest percentage of growth wasn’t teenagers, either — it was adults aged 45-54.

Flickr seems to have some catching up to do, too, judging by its traffic. A ComScore study ranked Flickr at 18.3 million U.S. visitors per month in July, behind Facebook Photos at 25.4 million and Photobucket at 23.5 million. Google’s Picasa came in last with 8.3 million monthly U.S. visitors.

Yahoo is currently looking at testing an open source approach to Flickr in the future, another move that could set it apart from the competition in the world of photo sharing.
